Winter is here. Be sure to take your flu shot in the form of prayer and supplements. I never do the flu shots. I use wisdom in my comings and goings, try to shake hands with gloves on, don't get in the intimate space of people if I can help it. Most importantly (besides prayer) is taking vitamin C and Alpha Lopic Acid, which really enhances the affects of the vit C. If you get a cold take 10 grams (10,000 milligrams of vitamin C), 300 mg of ALA (Alpha Lopic Acid). I take 1,000 mg a day, and then increase if needed. 10,000mg would be about 1/4 tsp (2300 mg per 1/4 tsp) of C crystals in divided dosages. You can put it in any juice drink or drink it alone. I put 1/4 tsp in my water in the morning along with a couple of ounces of pomegranate juice (which has a lot of potassium)...I use this to take my regular vitamins in the morning. You can also get Vitamin C buffered if you have a sensitive stomach or you can just drink your C with food. If I don't have crystals, I get 1,000 mg in a capsule and take with the ALA. Actually, I can't remember when I have had a cold or flu.
Jean's Easy Winter SoupThis is a slow-cooker soup you can let cook all day. 1 package frozen mixed vegetables pinch of nutmeg 1onion 1 can stewed tomatoes 5 cloves garlic (sliced in half) 1 box or can of chicken broth 1 cup of cooked quinoa (add later) 1 tbsp olive oil 2 bay leaves 2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 can Rotel tomatoes dash of red pepper flakes salt and pepper to taste a bit of basil if desired I sometimes add 1/2 cabbage head in 2 quarters...it gives a good flavor and cooks your cabbage at the same time. Cabbage is really good for you (fiber and anti-cancer food). If you like you can brown stew meat or ground beef and add instead of quinoa for protein (makes stew).
Add 8 oz of chicken broth at a time... depending on how thin you want it. After the pot warms up on high (about 10 min)...put it on low and let it cook all day until dinner time. Bon petit' (good eating). Just put your tomatoes in first, turn your crock pot on high to begin. Add your chopped onion and the rest except for the quinoa which is best cooked separately and put into the soup when it is served. You can add it about half way through. It overcooks like pasta in a slow cooker crock pot if it is cooked too long. Don't forget to rinse the quinoa before cooking. even if it is organic. It has that sudsy coating if not organic and if it is ..still needs rinsing. If you do not want to use quinoa , maybe because you are leaving for the day, just put in a can of your favorite beans for protein...and YOU ARE GOOD TO GO! Of course, you can use meat if you wish...good free range chicken or buffalo or even ground sirloin. **A good time to good this is on Monday and serve it to the family Monday night...put what is left in the frig for Wednesday night before church. Then, you don't have to cook Mon or Wed when things are really busy!
***I used to cook this on Saturday and eat for a meal on the weekend when I don't want to cook and again on Monday...when I SURE don't want to cook!...(rarely do I go out to eat)... Now, I put it on to cook Tues morning and have it Tuesday and Thursday night; then freeze what may be left after 3 days.
Menu (suggestion) Monday - Soup/stew (above) Tuesday - Fish (canned red salmon in a quick loaf) with Texmati brown rice and peas Wednesday - Soup/stew Thursday - Italian (pasta with greens or salad) Friday - Fish (breaded tilapia and green beans) Saturday ....up for grabs Sunday - alternate with chicken or roast in a crock pot while you go off to church. even a fish chowder with potatoes is good in the crock. It is best not to eat steak more than once a month. I like angus steak! Also like lamb chops.
